Chapter Sixteen
Despite my plans for entering The Centre, I had never expected to meet Gregian Everenden. Especially not as the princess.
His calculating eyes observed me as we walked through the corridors of the castle I had once known so well, as if he were enjoying my eyes scanning for anything I might remember, not that there was much.
What had burnt down had been replaced over the years. The once glistening castle was run down and dark. The portraits and tapestries that previously lined the halls had been torn down, the walls bare and the stone beneath them revealed.
Gregianâs voice was penetrating as he spoke, âDo you like what Iâve done with the place, Your Highness?â he was striding beside me, Silas on my other side. But he did not dare to speak, his gaze on the ground.
I bit the inside of my cheek, biting back a sarcastic remark. I knew that Silasâ previous advice was relevant. I sighed heavily instead, holding my hands behind my back. âWhat are you going to do with me?â
âAll in good time,â the man snickered, but the humour did not reach his eyes, so the action was cold.
The dress felt heavy against my body now, restricting every part of me wanting to grab my dagger and make a run for it. However, I knew I had to bide my time and kept my eyes ahead.
We entered the old throne room, and I swallowed thickly, realising that he was trying to show off his new position. It looked unchanged in comparison to the rest of the castle. The throne my father had sat on was still there, the smaller one for my mother present too. The only difference I noticed was the hanging tapestries that used to hold the coat of arms of the royal family, with the famous white iris, had been torn down and replaced with a green tapestryâa dyre demon at its centre in silver.
It made me shudder, knowing that Gregian highlighted how his family had ties with the dyre demons, those that had no feeling or emotion. He delighted in their connection and celebrated it.
Across the kingdom it was known that Underworlders often tried to consult dyre demons, using them as their own personal guards. That day when we had met the men in the forest, had Silas set them on us? Or his father? Was that all part of their plan from the beginning?
I had so many questions regarding our meeting and what had followed, but there was no one to ask. No one who would answer me honestly.
Silas and I stayed at the bottom of the dais. Gregian approached it, and the young woman at his side followed but did not sit down. I knew Silas was afraid of his father, but he had never mentioned his mother to me.
The woman resembled both Gregian and Silas, and so I guessed that perhaps she was not his wife but his daughter. She had a head of dark curls, and her eyes were the same colour as Silasâ, wide and watching the two of us.
